Cornerstone
Community Church began in the summer of 1989 as a group of 15-20 people had a
vision to plant an evangelical church in the Hillcrest area of Cleveland’s east
suburbs. The Hillcrest region is a
densely populated collection of middle to upper-middle class suburbs with
excellent school systems and a strong community atmosphere. As a result, the area attracts many young
families. A significant percentage of
these young families are disillusioned with their religious upbringing so
Pastor Armand Tiffe and the core group of Cornerstone believed that a
contemporary style church with a relevant presentation of the Word of God would
meet the needs of many in the Hillcrest area.
The leadership team believed there
would be great benefits to being affiliated with a solid evangelical
denomination so, after careful consideration, they decided to affiliate with
the Evangelical Free Church of America (www.efcs.org) and is actively involved
in the denomination.
Cornerstone held its first public
worship service in September of 1989 and has grown steadily ever since. We began meeting publicly at the Hillcrest
YMCA on Mayfield Road and met there for seven years. In 1994 we purchased the property where the
church is now located. The property
already had a church building on it, but it was much too small. Before we moved in, our members donated many
hours of their own time to build our Worship Center and renovated the old
section into office and classroom space.
We moved into our current facility in March of 1996. We soon outgrew our classrooms and in 1999 we
built a new wing with four classrooms.
Before long we filled them also.
To accommodate our continued growth, in 2006 we added a second worship
service on Sundays.
In 2009 we purchased the house on the southeast corner of our property
(1414 Lander Road) which added another 1.5 acres to our property and gave us a
very comfortable and versatile space for a variety of ministry functions.
Throughout our history there has been an upbeat spiritual energy and
excitement about what God has done through this ministry and will continue to
do. We look forward with great anticipation to how God will work in and through us at Cornerstone!
